This Health, Safety and Conduct policy is an operational document of One Button Studio. It is not a policy of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and has not been issued or approved by the University. Where applicable law or a binding KNUST requirement says something different, that law or requirement applies.

A studio contains hot lights, cables, stands and electrical equipment. This policy explains how to stay safe in One Button Studio.

1.Your responsibilities

Everyone in the studio must:

  • follow the reasonable safety instructions of studio staff;
  • take reasonable care of their own safety and that of others;
  • tell staff at once about anything that looks unsafe.

The studio is on University premises. KNUST maintains a Health and Safety Policy and a Security Policy, published on its University Policies page, and its requirements apply in addition to this policy.

2.Emergencies

Emergency exits

Ask staff to show you the emergency exits when you arrive. Keep exits and the routes to them clear at all times. Do not block them with equipment, bags or furniture.

Fire

  • If you discover a fire, raise the alarm and tell staff immediately.
  • Leave by the nearest exit. Do not stop to collect belongings or equipment.
  • Do not use fire-fighting equipment unless you have been trained and it is safe to do so.
  • Do not bring naked flames, smoke effects or anything that creates a fire risk into the studio without written authorisation.

Evacuation

If the alarm sounds or you are told to leave, stop what you are doing and go to the assembly point indicated by staff. Do not go back into the building until you are told it is safe.

First aid and accidents

Tell staff straight away about any injury, however minor. Staff will arrange first aid or further help.

  • Emergency contact: [PLACEHOLDER: Approved emergency contact]

If someone is in immediate danger, contact the emergency services first.

3.Electrical safety

  • Use only the sockets and power supplies staff have shown you.
  • Do not overload sockets or extension leads.
  • Tell staff before plugging in equipment you have brought with you. Staff may refuse equipment that appears unsafe.
  • Do not use equipment that is damaged, or that has been affected by liquid.
  • Keep food and drink away from electrical equipment.

4.Cables and trip hazards

  • Keep cables out of walkways wherever possible, and secure those that must cross one.
  • Keep bags, cases and stands out of the routes people use.
  • Watch for cables and stand legs when moving around a set, particularly in low light.

5.Lighting equipment

  • Studio lights can become very hot. Do not touch a lamp or its housing during or shortly after use.
  • Do not cover lights or place fabric, paper or other materials on or near them.
  • Do not move or adjust lighting stands unless staff have shown you how.
  • Do not look directly into a light at close range.

6.Handling equipment

  • Ask staff before moving heavy or mounted equipment.
  • Do not climb on furniture or equipment.
  • Make sure stands and tripods are stable and fully locked before use.
  • Follow the equipment rules in the Studio Policy.

7.Studio capacity

Maximum number of people in the studio at one time: [PLACEHOLDER: Maximum number of people in the studio]

This limit includes the person who booked, guests and crew. Staff may refuse entry to people beyond the limit.

8.Reporting accidents and hazards

Report every accident, near miss, fault or hazard to staff as soon as you notice it. The studio keeps a record of incidents involving equipment.

  • Studio manager: [PLACEHOLDER: Studio manager contact]

9.Conduct

Safe use of the studio also depends on how people behave. The standards of conduct, including the rules on prohibited items, noise and security, are set out in the Studio Policy.

10.Staff instructions

Staff may pause or stop any activity they reasonably consider unsafe. A session stopped for a safety reason may be resumed once the hazard has been dealt with.
